A Candle Before the MCCQE
The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam is a long, demanding day that stands between years of training and the right to practise medicine in Canada. The pressure is real, and so is the exhaustion. Breathe — you have carried harder days than this. Here are a few calming tips, a short prayer, and a candle you can light.

Before the MCCQE: Tips to Endure and Stay Calm
Treat It Like a Marathon Day
The MCCQE is long. Pace yourself, use the breaks to actually rest, hydrate, and eat something. Endurance matters as much as knowledge over a full day at the screen.
Don't Second-Guess at the End
When you are tired, the temptation is to go back and rewrite answers you already reasoned through. Trust your first clinical judgment unless you have a clear reason to change it. Flag, move on, and keep your energy for what's ahead.
One Question at a Time
A clinical case can feel overwhelming if you look at the whole day at once. Narrow your focus to the single decision in front of you, make it, and move to the next. That is how you carry a long exam.
Trust the Years Behind You
You did not reach this exam without knowing medicine. The knowledge is in you. Before you begin, breathe and pray quietly, 'Lord, steady me and bring to mind what I know.'
Prayer
A Prayer Before the MCCQE
Lord, giver of wisdom and healing, be with me through this long day. Steady my mind when it tires, sharpen my judgment, and bring back to me all that I have learned. Help me reason clearly, decide wisely, and endure to the last question with a calm heart.
Whatever the outcome, let my years of study serve the good of the sick, and keep alive in me the desire to heal in Your name. I place this exam, and the road it opens, in Your hands. Amen.
Prayer
A Prayer for the Calling to Heal
Lord, You are the great physician, and every gift of healing comes from You. Thank You for calling me to the work of medicine. Let this exam open the door to caring for others, and make me a doctor who carries Your compassion and Your patience to every patient. “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed” (Jeremiah 17:14). Amen.

For International Medical Graduates
If you earned your medical degree abroad and are now sitting the MCCQE to practise in Canada, you carry a particular weight: proving, all over again, a competence you have already lived. That is draining, and it is not fair-feeling, and it is still worth it.
The medicine you learned and practised elsewhere is real and it is yours. This exam is a translation of it into a new system, not a test of whether you are truly a doctor. Give yourself patience for how long and hard this road is.

If You Have to Sit It Again
A result that is not a pass does not erase your training or your calling. Many practising physicians did not clear every exam on the first attempt. Read the feedback honestly, target your weaker areas, and book the next date.
Set down the shame; it slows you more than any gap in knowledge. Rest, regroup, and go again. The work of healing is still waiting for you.
Scripture
Scripture for Wisdom and Endurance
“Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise.”
Jeremiah 17:14
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
Galatians 6:9
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 2:6
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
Philippians 4:6

Light a candleFrequently Asked Questions
- Which candle should I light for the MCCQE?
- A 12-hour candle covers test day. If you want it lit from the evening before, or you are retaking, a 48-hour candle is a better fit. Add your name and an intention like 'for a clear mind at the MCCQE'.
- Can I light a candle for a doctor I know?
- Yes. Many people light a candle for a partner, child, or friend sitting the MCCQE. Enter their name and your intention as a quiet gesture of support.
- Is a candle a substitute for preparation?
- No. A candle and a prayer are support, not a shortcut. They help you arrive calmer and steadier. The study is still yours to do.
- I'm an international medical graduate — is this for me?
- Yes. Many IMGs licensing in Canada light a candle during the exam and the wait for results. You are welcome here.
- What if my candle doesn't appear?
- Matching usually takes up to 2 minutes. If it takes longer, check that the payment matches the exact tariff ($3 or $7) or contact us.
